Non-OHSU Student Worker
The Vollum Institute is a privately endowed research institute at Oregon Health & Science University dedicated to basic research that will lead to new treatments for neurological and psychiatric diseases. Vollum scientists have broad-ranging interests that coalesce around molecular neurobiology and cellular physiology.
Their work has transformed the field of neuroscience and, in particular, have provided important advances in the study of synaptic transmission, neuronal development, neurotransmitter transporters, ion channels and the neurobiology of disease.
Function/Duties of Position:
Under direct supervision, primarily performs basic research or lab activities similar to a Research Assistant 1 or Lab Aide.- Animal behavior assays, tissue sample collection and processing, library research, data collection, data analysis.
- Cleaning/sterilizing lab instruments and surfaces.
- Stocking lab with supplies.
Required Qualifications:
- Enrolled in or on vacation from or is otherwise registered in an undergraduate program (minimum 6 credit hours).
- Advanced knowledge of Microsoft Office.
- Exceptional organizational skills and ability to manage multiple priorities.
- Strong interpersonal communication skills.
- Ability to be self-motivated, to prioritize effectively and meet deadlines.
- Ability to gather, compile, analyze and maintain data in a range of formats.
Preferred Qualifications:
- Student currently working towards a bachelor’s degree in neuroscience or a relevant field.
- Experience performing rodent behavior assays and/or electrophysiological recordings research is highly desired.
- Ability to code in Python or Matlab.
- Knowledge and application of gathering, compiling, and reporting research data for a peer-reviewed publication.
Additional Details:
The student will be working in a basic science research lab with chemicals, working at a desk for extended periods, entering an animal facility, and regularly handling live mice for behavioral experiments.
