Mainframe Modernization Lead (AI-Driven)

Location: US / Canada (Remote / Hybrid)

Overview

We are seeking a Mainframe Modernization Lead (AI-Driven) to drive large-scale transformation initiatives focused on migrating legacy mainframe systems to modern, cloud-native, or distributed architectures.

This role leverages AI-driven tools and automation to accelerate code conversion, system replatforming, and business logic transformation. The ideal candidate brings deep expertise in both legacy mainframe environments and modern development ecosystems, enabling the design and execution of migration strategies that minimize risk while maximizing scalability and performance.

Key Responsibilities
  • Lead end-to-end mainframe modernization initiatives, including assessment, planning, execution, and post-migration optimization
  • Utilize AI-driven tools and automation frameworks to accelerate code conversion and reduce manual migration effort
  • Analyze legacy environments (e.g., COBOL-based systems) to identify dependencies, risks, and modernization opportunities
  • Define and execute migration strategies such as replatforming, refactoring, or full system replacement
  • Partner with business stakeholders to ensure critical functionality is preserved and enhanced during transformation
  • Oversee integration of modernized systems with enterprise applications and data platforms
  • Establish robust testing, validation, and quality assurance frameworks to ensure post-migration integrity
  • Provide leadership and direction to cross-functional teams, including developers, architects, and analysts
Ideal Background
  • Extensive experience with legacy mainframe technologies (e.g., COBOL, JCL, and related systems)
  • Proven success leading large-scale modernization or migration initiatives in enterprise environments
  • Experience leveraging AI or automation tools for code analysis, transformation, or optimization
  • Strong understanding of cloud platforms and modern application architectures
  • Experience in legacy-heavy industries such as finance, healthcare, or government
  • Ability to evaluate complex systems and design scalable, future-ready solutions
  • Strong stakeholder management and communication skills
  • Experience leading large, distributed, cross-functional teams
Must-Have Qualifications
  • Direct experience with AI-assisted mainframe migration tools or frameworks (beyond traditional lift-and-shift approaches)
  • Hands-on leadership of at least one full-scale mainframe modernization or exit program
