Spindle Repair Technician

We are seeking a highly skilled and detail-oriented Spindle Repair Technician to join our growing service team. The successful candidate will be responsible for disassembling, inspecting, rebuilding, and testing precision CNC machine tool spindles to OEM specifications.

This role requires exceptional mechanical aptitude, experience with precision measuring tools, and the ability to work in a clean-room environment to ensure the highest quality repairs.

Contract to Hire position.

Key Responsibilities
  • Disassembly & Inspection: Carefully disassemble spindles and conduct detailed inspections of components (shafts, housings, bearings, drawbars) for wear, damage, or contamination.
  • Repair & Rebuild: Clean, repair, and replace components, including the installation of high-speed precision bearings (ABEC 7/9).
  • Precision Measurement: Utilize precision measuring equipment (micrometers, indicators, gauge blocks, air gauges) to ensure tolerances meet or exceed OEM specifications.
  • Bearing Preload: Calculate and execute proper bearing arrangement and preload adjustments.
  • Balancing & Testing: Balance rotating components and conduct final test runs (run-in) to verify performance, vibration levels, and temperature stabilization.
  • Troubleshooting: Diagnose spindle failures, including electronic sensors, encoder testers, and pneumatic/hydraulic tool change systems.
  • Documentation: Complete detailed inspection reports, repair documentation, and log hours in ERP/MRP systems.
  • Machine Operation: Operate manual lathes, grinders, and presses for minor rework of spindle components.
Required Qualifications
  • Experience: 25+ years of experience in precision mechanical repair, ideally focused on CNC spindles, high-speed motors, or tool-room maintenance.
  • Technical Skills: Deep understanding of bearing types and fits, spindle construction, and lubrication systems.
  • Measurement Tools: Proficiency in using micrometers, calipers, and dial indicators.
  • Blueprint Reading: Ability to read and interpret engineering drawings, blueprints, and ISO/GD&T specifications.
  • Education: High school diploma or GED; Technical certificate or apprenticeship in machine repair is a plus.
Physical Requirements
  • Ability to lift up to 50 lbs regularly.
  • Comfortable working in a clean-room environment.
Preferred Skills
  • Experience with manual machining (grinding, turning).
  • Understanding of hydraulic and pneumatic systems related to spindles.
  • Experience with PLC troubleshooting.
