Required Licenses & Certifications- BLS certification from the American Heart Association (AHA) required
- Certified Surgical Technologist (CST) OR LVN/LPN License required
- Weekend: 1–2 (24-hour) weekend call shifts per schedule
- On-Call: 1–2 call nights per week
- Floating: Required to float to other departments as needed
Job Summary
Performs a variety of technical duties to assist in preparing and caring for pre-operative patients. Prepares patient skin for surgery in accordance with hospital standards and maintains strict aseptic techniques. Provides patient support while ensuring privacy and comfort.Transports patients to and from the operating room and assists with positioning based on surgical needs. Responsible for identifying and handling biological specimens and preparing the operating room with appropriate instruments and supplies.
Key Responsibilities- Assist in delivering direct patient care in the OR under the supervision of a registered nurse
- Establish and maintain sterile fields during surgical procedures
- Pass instruments, sutures, and supplies to surgeons as needed
- Prepare and set up operating rooms using physician preference cards
- Maintain and update preference cards for accuracy
- Demonstrate proficiency in multiple specialties (preferred): Transplant, Open Heart, Urology, Neurology, Robotics, etc.
- Ensure compliance with aseptic and safety standards at all times
- Maintain knowledge of surgical instruments, supplies, and equipment
- Follow Universal Precautions and infection control policies
- Support team collaboration and patient-centered care
- Ensure proper OR traffic control, dress code, and sanitation compliance
- Assist with decontamination, sterilization, and processing of instruments
- Adapt care based on patient-specific needs (age, condition, cultural factors)
- Perform other duties as assigned
- High School Diploma or equivalent required
- Completion of a Surgical Technology program OR accredited LVN/LPN program required
- Minimum 2+ years of experience preferred
- Must obtain Certified Surgical Technologist certification within 180 days of graduation (if applicable)
- Strong knowledge of OR procedures, sterile techniques, and patient care standards
