Position Overview
The Chief Estimator is responsible for leading and developing the estimating function with a focus on accuracy, consistency, and accountability.
This role requires both technical expertise and leadership discipline to ensure estimates are aligned with company standards, risk is clearly defined, and projects are positioned for successful execution.
The Chief Estimator works closely with Business Development, Operations, and Finance to support strategic growth, improve hit rate, and maintain strong backlog quality.

Key Responsibilities
Estimating Leadership- Lead and manage estimating team performance
- Establish and maintain standardized estimating processes
- Ensure consistency and accountability across all estimates
- Maintain cost databases for labor and materials
- Oversee vendor quote tracking and bid documentation
- Implement risk identification and contingency practices
- Support bid/no-bid decisions with Business Development
- Align estimating efforts with company goals and backlog needs
- Prioritize opportunities based on probability and profitability
- Track key metrics including hit rate, accuracy, and capacity
- Report on estimating performance and pipeline activity
- Identify areas for improvement based on results
- Ensure complete and accurate project handoff documentation
- Clearly define scope, assumptions, and risks
- Support continuous improvement through field feedback
- Train and mentor estimating staff
- Establish clear expectations and accountability
- Support long-term team growth and capability
- 5+ years of experience in electrical contracting
- Experience in estimating, preconstruction, or estimating leadership
- Demonstrated ability to build or improve estimating processes and systems
- Strong understanding of:
- Risk identification and mitigation
- Material pricing and procurement processes
- Labor productivity and cost modeling
- Experience working cross-functionally with Business Development, Operations, and Finance
- Strong leadership, communication, and organizational skills
- Experience using estimating software and tracking tools
- Experience with commercial or industrial electrical projects
- Multi-state or multi-region project experience
- Design-assist or negotiated project experience
- Proven improvement in estimating performance metrics (hit rate, accuracy)
- Experience training and developing estimating teams
- Remote work environment
