Adult Special Education Tutor (Sacramento Area)
We are seeking a patient, structured, and compassionate tutor to work 1:1 with an adult student with autism. This role focuses on building foundational academic skills, functional learning, and real-world independence.
The ideal candidate has experience working with neurodivergent adults and can provide clear, structured instruction tailored to individual learning needs.
This is a highly impactful role supporting both academic growth and independent living skills.
Responsibilities- Provide individualized instruction in reading, writing, and math
- Support reading fluency, comprehension, and retention strategies
- Teach functional and applied math (time, money, real-world problem solving)
- Develop foundational literacy and writing skills when needed
- Support DMV written test preparation
- Build functional academic and life skills for independence
- Incorporate Social/Emotional Learning (SEL) into instruction
- Help apply learning to real-life tasks (recipes, workplace expectations, daily living)
- Use structured, repetitive, and step-by-step teaching methods
- Track progress and reinforce learning consistently
Student Overview
The student is an adult learner with autism who benefits from structured, patient instruction and consistent reinforcement.
Key learning needs include:
- Reading comprehension and information retention
- Functional academic and life skills development
- Applied math for everyday situations
- Literacy and writing development (foundational as needed)
- Independent living and employment readiness skills
- DMV test preparation support
- Social awareness and communication skills
The student is motivated to learn and responds well to real-world applications, structured routines, and interest-based learning.
Ideal Candidate- Experience working with autistic or neurodivergent adults preferred
- Strong ability to teach foundational literacy and math skills
- Comfortable using structured, repetitive instructional strategies
- Patient, reliable, and consistent teaching approach
- Ability to break down concepts into simple, clear steps
- Experience with functional life-skills instruction is a plus
- Strong communication and relationship-building skills
- Flexible scheduling
- Part-time hours
- In-person sessions preferred (Sacramento area)
Compensation
$25–$35 per hour, depending on experience and qualifications.

- Must be enrolled in College or have completed an AA, BA or higher.
- Ability to make learning fun, interactive, and student-focused
