About Our Client
I'm currently partnered with a professional design and engineering firm offering multi-discipline support services across a wide range of infrastructure projects. Following a period of growth and integration through acquisitions, the organization is now looking to add a Assistant Controller to their team in downtown Chicago.
Reporting directly to the VP of Finance, the Controller will oversee core accounting operations, including general ledger, project/job cost accounting, and financial reporting, while providing leadership to the accounting and project finance teams.This role also supports audit readiness, drives process improvements, and partners closely with operations to deliver meaningful financial insights that support decision-making.
Job Description
Assistant Controller Responsibilities:
- Manage day-to-day accounting activities across key functions, including general ledger, project-based accounting, payables, receivables, payroll, and fixed assets
- Oversee the preparation of timely and accurate financial statements on a monthly, quarterly, and annual basis in accordance with GAAP
- Ensure appropriate internal controls are in place and maintained, supporting compliance requirements and coordinating audit-related activities
- Provide leadership over project accounting processes, including job setup, cost tracking, and revenue recognition tied to ongoing work
- Work closely with operational teams to evaluate project performance and identify opportunities to improve margins and overall profitability
- Develop and enhance financial reporting tools, including dashboards and standardized reports, to increase visibility into financial and project metrics
- Lead, mentor, and develop accounting staff while promoting a collaborative and accountable team environment
- Identify opportunities to streamline processes, improve system utilization, and implement automation where appropriate
- Support planning activities such as budgeting, forecasting, and financial analysis to help guide business decisions

The Successful Applicant- Bachelor's degree in Accounting, Finance, or a related field required. CPA designation is required.
- 7+ years of progressive accounting experience, preferably within a publicly traded or publicly held environment.
- Strong proficiency in Excel and experience working with ERP systems.
- Excellent communication skills with the ability to clearly present complex financial information.
- Experience with job cost accounting and project-based financial reporting is required.
