Position Summary
The CVI Specialist is a certified Teacher of the Visually Impaired with specialized expertise in Cortical/Cerebral Visual Impairment (CVI). The CVI Specialist is responsible for assessing, supporting, and advancing the visual access and learning outcomes of students with CVI through the administration of The CVI Range, development of data-driven instructional strategies, and collaboration with an interdisciplinary team.The role focuses on ensuring students with CVI receive appropriate, individualized, and evidence-based visual supports across academic, functional, and environmental contexts.
Primary Responsibilities Assessment & Evaluation- Administer The CVI Range in accordance with established protocols and best practices.
- Collect observable, environmental, and performance-based data to determine
- Analyze CVI Range results to identify strengths, needs, and functional vision priorities.
- Prepare clear, comprehensive, and timely written reports based on CVI Range results for use in IEP and/or accommodation plan development and educational planning.
- Design and implement individualized instructional strategies aligned with students'
- Adapt and modify academic materials, classroom environments, and instructional methods based on CVI Range data (e.g., color, contrast, complexity, movement, visual field preferences)
- Provide direct instruction, consultation, and modeling of CVI-specific strategies across educational settings.
- Support students' access to the curriculum by addressing both visual and learning needs through specially designed instruction (SDI).
- Develop measurable, meaningful IEP goals and objectives grounded in CVI Range results and functional visual needs.
- Recommend appropriate accommodations, modifications, and supports related to CVI within the IEP and/or accommodation plan.
- Ensure IEP documentation reflects accurate interpretation of CVI assessment data and aligns with IDEA requirements.
- Monitor student progress toward IEP goals and accommodations/modifications and adjust instruction and supports as needed.
- Collaborate closely with teachers, therapists, orientation & mobility specialists, related service providers, administrators, and families.
- Serve as a CVI resource and advocate within IEP teams, helping team members understand CVI and its impact on learning.
- Provide professional development, coaching, and consultation to staff regarding CVI-informed practices.
- Partners with families to support carryover of CVI strategies across home and school environments.
- Valid certification as a Teacher of the Visually Impaired (TVI)
- Demonstrated experience administering The CVI Range
- Experience writing clear, data-driven reports based on CVI Range results.
- Experience adapting academic and instructional materials based on CVI Range Phase and characteristics.
- Demonstrated ability to write and implement IEP goals and specially designed instruction aligned with CVI assessment data.
- Strong collaboration, communication, and advocacy skills.
- Advanced training or certification related to CVI.
- Experience working at a school or program serving students with visual impairments and multiple disabilities.
- Familiarity with assistive technology and environmental adaptations for students with CVI.
- Experience providing professional development or coaching to educators and staff.
