This position is only available for LCCC students enrolled in at least six (6) credit hours/semester.

Job Summary: Core responsibilities of this position include:

The Laboratory Assistant, Chemistry position for LCCC is a part-time, non-benefited, position that is responsible for assisting the instructor in the set-up for laboratory classes and general laboratory maintenance.

Other tasks may be assigned based on contemporary institutional need.

Start Date: As soon as practical.
Compensation: Minimum $15.03/hr.

Responsibilities:

Essential Functions: – this position is Non-Exempt, i.e., is eligible for compensatory or overtime pay provisions of the FLSA. This listing of essential duties is not all-inclusive, but representative; other duties may be assigned).

Program Support Functions: This work may be performed in a laboratory setting; all Personal Protective Equipment and Safety Standards must be utilized. Work to be performed under the supervision of program faculty is as follows:

 •  Preparation of reagents
 •  Setting up laboratory apparatus
 •  Cleanup of laboratory apparatus
 •  Inventory of supplies
 •  Utilize proper techniques and safety precautions

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

 •  Knowledge of science lab safety procedures.
 •  Basic knowledge of Microsoft Office 365 software.

Physical/Mental Demands:

 •  Maintain appropriate composure and necessary confidentiality with regard to both past and current employee, student, and donor data; documents; issues; etc., and respect privacy needs of all employees, students, and donors.
 •  Ability to work in a laboratory setting with potential exposure to bodily fluids, chemicals, and blood borne pathogens; Personal Protective Equipment and safety procedures must be utilized as required.
 •  Manipulate instruments, supplies, and equipment with speed, dexterity, and exceptional hand-eye coordination.
 •  Function in an environment with substantial latex and/or nitrile material exposure and without an allergic reaction.
 •  Comply with highly inflexible deadlines is required; there will be multiple occurrences of sudden, urgent task completion required.
 •  A variable work schedule may be required including long workdays, evenings, and weekends as needed.
 •  There may be occurrences of interacting with employees and/or students, past employees and/or students, members of the general public, and others who express opinions, may exhibit strong emotions, which will require the employee to interact professionally, diplomatically, and appropriately in such situations.
 •  Frequently required to move around the assigned work areas as well as within hallways, meeting rooms, and other parts of the campus facilities.
 •  There may be multiple/daily instances of prolonged sitting, standing, kneeling and personal computer use, which would include keyboard and/or mouse usage as well as viewing a computer monitor.
 •  An employee must frequently lift and/or move up to 25 pounds and occasionally lift and/or move up to 50 pounds to perform essential position functions. For lifts exceeding 50lbs, a team lift technique is required.
 •  Specific vision abilities required by this position include close vision, distance vision, and ability to adjust focus.
 •  The overall work environment requires the mental ability to shift focal point quickly due to interruptions; an employee must be able to mentally track multiple projects and tasking as well.
 •  The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate; however, there may be unexpected instances of somewhat loud sounds.

Education and Experience Requirements:

Minimum Qualifications:

 •  Highschool Diploma, GED, or equivalent
 •  Admission at LCCC and continued enrollment in a minimum of 6 credits a semester, (exceptions may be given for summer term with supervisor approval)

Preferred Qualifications:

 •  Have completed at least one chemistry course at LCCC
 •  Experience working in science labs.
