Department Overview:
The Division of Bariatric Surgery specializes in weight-loss surgery, medical weight loss, nutrition and lifestyle adjustment. The surgery team includes experienced bariatric nurse practitioners, certified bariatricians, clinical dieticians, nurses, psychologist, and support staff, all specially trained in caring for obese patients and coordinated to assist with multidisciplinary care.
Procedures offered include Gastric Bypass, Gastric Sleeve, Duodenal Switch Procedures, Single Anastomosis Dueodeno-Illeal bypass, and Revisional Bariatric Surgery. Surgeons within the program also conduct ongoing research in the field of bariatrics, following patients long-term from pre- to post-surgery.
This position will practice at OHSU and Hillsboro Medical Center.
The Advanced Practice Provider (APP) is a faculty member credentialed and privileged as a Physician Assistant (PA). The APP is a member of the Hillsboro Professional Staff, OHSU Professional Staff and Adventist Professional Staff practicing in accordance with the respective bylaws.
The APP shall provide services as assigned by the supervisor in furtherance of the university’s missions and goals of teaching, research, patient care, outreach and public service. The APP is expected to comply with scope of practice, other laws, regulations, OHSU policy, and other applicable professional standards of practice.
Function/Duties of Position:
Clinical Responsibilities
• Inpatient Responsibilities: Providing inpatient care and follow-up of assigned patients from OR to admission, and through discharge at multiple surgical locations, including OHSU and primarily Hillsboro Medical center with an anticipated ratio of 40% Bariatric patients, 30% Vascular patients, and 30% General Surgery patients Includes, but is not limited to: rounding on a daily basis with the faculty, developing and implementing, in conjunction with faculty physicians, clinical plans of care and/or protocols for inpatients on the Bariatric, Vascular, and General Surgery service with common conditions/diagnoses/procedures; educating the house staff and nursing unit staff on these protocols, with the goal of enhancing quality of care, enhancing quality of patient services, and decreasing length of inpatient stay; participating with hospital/unit staff in evaluating results of these protocols and continually improving effectiveness of same; working actively with hospital and unit staff to rapidly develop and implement discharge plans for inpatients on the Bariatrics, Vascular and General Surgery service and to address length of stay issues; promoting and maintaining health of inpatients on the Bariatric and General Surgery service through the use of ancillary services, educational materials, and counseling of patients and families; providing resident and intern training/education in utilization of plans of care to improve patient services and outcomes of treatment; providing and/or participating in clinical in-service training and staff educational programs for the inpatient service. Following all customer service standards as outlined above.
• Operating Room Responsibilities: Provide operating room and procedural assistance to Bariatric, Vascular and General surgeons as determined by the Division Head or their designee(s). Includes assistance in performing laparoscopic and robotic surgeries to include, bariatric sleeves gastrectomy, gastric bypass, duodenal switch, foregut, colorectal, and vascular procedures.
General Responsibilities
• Teaching: Providing teaching of General Surgery surgical and diagnostic treatments to medical students, interns, residents, inpatient general surgery nursing staff, and other Division support staff on the inpatient and/or outpatient service. Providing and/or participating in clinical in-services and staff educational programs for the outpatient & inpatient General Surgery service.
• Call Coverage: Provide pager coverage on some week nights Monday through Thursday, and OR call coverage on occasional weekends which includes Saturday morning rounds, on a variable rotating basis.
Required Qualifications:
• Master’s Degree as required by specific Advanced Practice Provider role.
• Minimum two years clinical experience. Wound Care experience a plus.
• Current BLS Certification (ACLS a plus)
• Leadership and motivational attributes
• Analytical and organizational skills
• Excellent communication skills
• Customer Satisfaction aptitude
• Relationship-building expertise
• Results-driven orientation
• Professional in appearance and manner
• Computer literate
• Ability to build goodwill through positive interaction with patients and patient families, facility staff, referring physicians and OHSU Digestive Health Center staff and Hillsboro General Surgery staff.
• Demonstrated ability to satisfy standards of performance delineated by law and associated professional practice standards, the latter set forth as an addendum to the position description.
• Ability to manage heavy workload with multiple priorities and inflexible deadlines.
• Ability to communicate effectively verbally and in writing.
• Proficient in the use of computing hardware and software, including personal computing equipment, electronic medical record, word processing and spreadsheet software.
• Regular and consistent attendance at work
• Registration with the Oregon Board of Medical Examiners as a licensed Physician Assistant, license from the Oregon Board of Nursing; Drug Enforcement Association certification required.
