Job Title: Invasive Cardiovascular Technologist
Department: Cardiac Catheterization Laboratory

Job Summary: The Cardiac Catheterization Laboratory Invasive Cardiovascular Technologist is a technologist primarily specializing in the care of patients undergoing diagnostic cardiac catheterization, percutaneous transluminal coronary intervention (PTCI), and peripheral vascular diagnostic and interventional procedures.
The technologist, functioning in a spirit of teamwork, provides technical assistance during the pre, intra and post procedural phases of cardiac catheterization. The technologist performs duties to provide the highest level of patient care and maximize customer satisfaction.

Knowledge and skills necessary to provide age-appropriate care

Acquire and Maintain BCLS / ACLS certification within six months of hire.

Position Accountability:

Invasive Cardiovascular Technologist is accountable to the Manager, Invasive Cardiac Laboratory.

Primary Responsibilities:

o Assists physician with adult catheterization procedures, percutaneous transluminal coronary intervention (PTCI), myocardial biopsy, temporary pacemaker insertion, pericardiocentesis, Swan-Ganz insertion, intra-aortic balloon pump (IABP) insertion and other associated procedures.

o Records, monitors and assesses hemodynamic data collected during catheterizations.

o Completes all patient records accurately and in a timely fashion, this includes accurate cardiology database maintenance.

o Establishes and maintains rapport with patients throughout procedure

o Continuously monitors patient's physiologic and psychologic status throughout procedure (i.e. vital signs, cardiac rhythm, pain/discomfort, anxiety etc.) and communicates changes to physician

o Initiates and maintains IV access

o Operates specialized equipment used in the Cardiac Catheterization Laboratory (CCL) in a safe and efficient manner.

o Responds appropriately to all emergency situations within the Cardiac Catheterization Laboratory

o Initiates life support techniques in the event of a cardiac / respiratory arrest including CPR, temporary pacemaker insertion, intra-aortic balloon pump insertion and airway management

o Observes patient for complications related to medications or procedures and communicates findings to physician

o Discontinues arterial and/or venous access safely through use of manual compression or available compression devices

o Assists physician with use of invasive closure devices

Gives phone/verbal report on all patients

o Transports patients as necessary

o Restock and prepare catheterization laboratory between procedures

o Perform other duties as assigned

Secondary Responsibilities:

Assists in maintenance of a safe and efficient department

Performs quality assurance tasks within the department

Maintains and troubleshoots equipment within the department

Works collaboratively with CPU and CSU staff to facilitate patient flow

Collects data and enters information into databases as needed

Participates in formal and informal continuing education activities to maintain and improve clinical skills in catheterization procedures and cardiovascular technology

Attends all hospital required in-services

Attends staff meetings as required

Assures the proper level of supplies is always available in the unit

Assists with the orientation and training of new personnel

Promotes communication, teamwork and positive interpersonal relationships

Utilizes proper reporting channels

Develop ability to assisted in diagnostic electrophysiology procedures, interventional electrophysiology procedures.

Qualifications:

Graduate of an approved cardiopulmonary technology or radiology program

RCIS within two years of hire (if not certified)

Two years experience in an interventional catheterization laboratory preferred

BCLS / ACLS Certification (ACLS within six months of hire)

Must have PA license and ability to get FBI Fingerprint 2 weeks in advance of start date...Fingerprinting taking 10 days due to volume/ This is considered outpatient

Provides direct patient care before, during and after procedure.

Assists the physician with adult and pediatric cardiac catheterizations including but not limited to the following procedures and techniques: myocardial biopsy, transluminal coronary angioplasty and stenting, rotational atherectomy, temporary pacemaker insertion, pericardiocentesis, Swan-Ganz catheter insertion, cardiac assist device insertion, percutaneous valvuloplasty, percutaneous valve implantation, ASD/PFO closure, peripheral vascular diagnostic/interventional procedures.

Practice of sterile technique preparing for procedure including scrubbing, applying surgical gown, gloving, draping and setup of instrument table.

Records, monitors and assesses hemodynamic data collected during catheterizations.

Completes all patient records accurately and in a timely fashion.

Establishes and maintains rapport with patients throughout procedure.

Continuously monitors patient's physiologic and psychological status throughout procedure (i.e. vital signs, cardiac rhythm, pain/discomfort, anxiety, etc.) and responds appropriately.

Initiates and maintains IV access.

Administers all ordered medications, intravenous drips and emergency medications before, during and after procedure.

Operates specialized equipment used in the Cardiac Catheterization Laboratory (CCL) in a safe and efficient manner.

Responds appropriately to all emergency situations within the Cardiac Catheterization Laboratory.

Initiates life support techniques in the event of a cardiac/respiratory arrest including CPR, drug administration, defibrillation, temporary pacemaker insertion, intra-aortic balloon pump insertion and airway management.

Assesses patient for complications related to medications or procedures and responds appropriately.

Discontinues arterial and/or venous access safely through use of manual compression or available compression devices.

Assists physician with use of invasive closure devices.

Gives/receives phone/verbal report on all patients.

Transports patients as necessary.

Restocks and prepares catheterization laboratory between procedures.

Performs other duties as required or assigned.

Accepts On-Call responsibilities as assigned.

Min of 2 years Cardiac experience, BLS/ACLS is required.

Days with call

Call is 1-2 nights/week and one weekend every 4 weeks
