Overview:

The Nurse Educator is responsible for assessing, planning, implementing and evaluating educational programming and services required for all levels of Patient Care Services personnel to meet role expectations. A major focus of this position is the facilitation and implementation of orientation and skill development activities as well as facilitating continuing education.
The primary population served by the Nurse Educator is the patient care services staff; additional populations served include: allied health staff providing patient care, students, managers, community professionals and the public at large.

  0.  8 FTE, 4 days per week, M-F: 8am to 430pm

Responsibilities:

  1.  Assesses and identifies educational needs of new employees, preceptors and all levels of Patient Care Services staff in terms of orientation, skill and competency development and professional continuing education.
  2.  Plans programs to achieve the skills/competencies necessary to meet age-appropriate patient care needs.
  3.  Acts as a coach, role model, and/or mentor for competency development for students, staff, managers, community professionals, and public when leading and teaching educational programs both formal and informal using a variety of educational methods.
  4.  Provides formal and informal educational programs, such as classes, inservices, continuing education, and other major educational programs, to meet staff and organizational needs.
  5.  Instructs others to perform duties within the framework of the standards, policies and procedures set forth by Nationwide Children's Hospital, the Ohio Nurse Practice Act, the Joint Commission and other professional practice standards.
  6.  Facilitates problem solving and conflict resolution related to the learning of roles, skills, procedures and new equipment.
  7.  Participates in educational program evaluations and recommends changes to improve the quality of education and patient care.
  8.  Promotes patient-focused outcomes through communication with other disciplines, cross training and information sharing to meet common educational needs related to competency development.
  9.  Participates in departmental and divisional interview process, peer review, quality improvement activities, and committees as assigned.
 10.  Participates in the education of patient care services staff in the use of the electronic medical record and other informatics related technology.
 11.  Uses ethical principles to guide educational decisions and actions.
 12.  Maintains supplies and equipment for assigned Patient Care Services education programs/ services.
 13.  Incorporates valid clinical and educational evidence/research findings into teaching methods and educational programs.

Qualifications:

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES REQUIRED
  1.  Bachelor of Science in Nursing required. Master's degree preferred.
  2.  Registered Nurse with current licensure to practice nursing in the State of Ohio required.
  3.  Four years of demonstrated clinical competency in a pediatric setting required.
  4.  Teaching skills in classroom and clinical area. Ability to adapt teaching methods for various types of learners and subject areas being presented. Group facilitation skills. 5. Adept interpersonal skills and ability to relate effectively with patient care services staff and a variety of hospital departmental personnel and physicians.
  6.  Leadership ability as demonstrated through high level of initiative, clinical decision-making and organizational skills.
  7.  Computer skills to maintain a data base.
  8.  Must be able to see, hear, speak, read and perform manual tasks with or without accommodation, and care for oneself with little or no difficulty.
