PHYSICIAN (RHEUMATOLOGY) - GP-0602-14 - Fort Cavazos, TX

Fort Cavazos is located in the beautiful 'hill and lake' country of Central Texas between Killeen and Copperas Cove and is approximately 60 miles north of the capital city of Austin, 50 miles south of Waco, 160 miles south of Dallas, and 150 miles north of San Antonio.

Founded in 1942, this 340-sq.-mile military base is the Army's Premier Installation to train and deploy heavy forces.

A 214,968 acre installation, Fort Cavazos is now the largest active duty armored post in the U.S. Armed Forces and the only post in the United States capable of stationing and training two Armored Divisions.

Responsibilities:

Performs duties under the general supervision of the Officer In Charge (OIC), Internal Medicine Clinic and Chief, Department of Medicine. Assignments are performed independently in accordance with Carl R. Darnall Army Medical Center regulations, policies and procedures.
Work is reviewed in terms of results achieved and contribution to the mission of the service.

  1.  Provides direct expert patient care to patients in the Internal medicine clinic, and as a Rheumatology consultant for hospitalized patients Carl R. Darnall Army Medical Center (CRDAMC). Provides care and clinical supervision for a wide range of patient presentations, ages and conditions including emergent, urgent and non-urgent complaints. Evaluates, examines, diagnoses and treats Rheumatology and internal medical disorders for patients in the clinic or admitted to the hospital. Performs appropriate invasive and noninvasive diagnostic and therapeutic procedures acceptable for the specialties of Rheumatology and internal medicine including advanced cardiac life support. Provides all services identified in the current Model of Clinical Practice for Rheumatology as promulgated by specialty societies. Identifies significant and relevant symptoms of presenting Rheumatology or internal medicine patients that may be subtle or present with overlapping symptoms due to more complex diagnoses. Orders appropriate laboratory, x-ray, and other diagnostic tests; interprets the medical evidence, incorporating information into an accurate diagnosis or appraisal; institutes proper treatment and patient care. Facilitates patient access to continuing medical care by appropriate referrals to other healthcare providers and operating within the policies and regulations of the hospital. Renders consultative opinions to other physicians and auxiliary health personnel in the areas of expertise. Maintains health and clinical records in accordance with current regulations and standards. Directs the care of Rheumatology or Internal Medicine Services for patients to include supervision of residents, interns, medical students, and other paraprofessionals and administrative personnel when necessary. Responsible for the administration and teaching of all aspects of Rheumatology or Internal Medicine care to residents, interns and other medical personnel while on duty in the clinic or as Attending Staff on the internal medicine ward. Shares on-call duties with the other Rheumatology Staff for the Rheumatology service throughout the year. Has on-call duties while Attending Staff for a minimum 1-month of internal medicine ward each year conforming to the policies of the internal medicine residency program and Carl R. Darnall Army Medical Center.
  2.  As a member of the teaching staff for internal medicine and rheumatology participates in the graduate medical education of internal medicine residents, off-service residents, allied health residents, medical students and other medical trainees. Serve as a key and critical faculty member for the internal medicine residency in direct support of the internal medicine program director. Meets the scholarly requirements of the internal medicine residency program to include bedside teaching, formal lectures, mentoring resident research and contributing to regional/national presentations and medical publications in Rheumatology or internal medicine. Will seek and maintain an adjunct academic appointment (professorship) at a medical school affiliated with the medical center. Position may require occasional travel to affiliated medical training sites.
  3.  Participates in service and hospital performance improvement activities. Make recommendations on improvement of work methods, organizational features and the restructuring of positions to support the Rheumatology services and quality patient care at Carl R. Darnall Army Medical Center.

PERFORMS OTHER DUTIES AS ASSIGNED.

Conditions of Employment
 •  Appointment may be subject to a suitability or fitness determination, as determined by a completed background investigation.
 •  A Personnel Security Investigation is required.
 •  This position may have specific initial background investigation and periodic re-verification requirements since its duties may require interaction with children and youth under the age of eighteen (18) years of age on a recurring basis.
 •  Selectees may be required to sign a statement (Condition of Employment) consenting to seasonal influenza vaccinations or must provide a recognized exemption.
 •  This position is a Testing Designated Position subject to pre-employment screening and random drug testing. Selectees will be required to consent to participation in random drug urinalysis testing.
 •  A pre-placement medical examination may be required.
 •  Immunization screening may be required. Hepatitis B immunization is required for all positions with direct patient contact. Applicants may be required to show proof of other immunizations depending on the type of position.
 •  May be required to obtain and maintain current Basic Life Support (BLS) certification through the American Red Cross or American Heart Association. Advanced certification (e.g., ALS) does not supersede BLS.
 •  Applicants must be able to fulfill credentialing requirements and obtain and maintain appropriate/relevant clinical privileges.
 •  Moderate to heavy lifting up to 45 pounds may be required.

Qualifications:

US Citizenship required

Basic Requirement for Physician (Rheumatology):

Degree: Doctor of Medicine, Doctor of Osteopathic Medicine, or equivalent from a school in the United States or Canada. This degree must have been accredited by the Council on Medical Education of the American Medical Association; Association of American Medical Colleges; Liaison Committee on Medical Education; Commission on Osteopathic College Accreditation of the American Osteopathic Association, or an accrediting body recognized by the U.S. Department of Education at the time the degree was obtained.

A Doctor of Medicine or equivalent degree from a foreign medical school must have provided education and medical knowledge equivalent to accredited schools in the United States. Evidence of equivalency to accredited schools in the United States is demonstrated by permanent certification by the Educational Commission for Foreign Medical Graduates, a fifth pathway certificate for Americans who completed premedical education in the United States and graduate education in a foreign country, or successful completion of the U.S. Medical Licensing Examination.

Licensure: Applicants must possess a current, active, full, and unrestricted license or registration as a Physician from a State, the District of Columbia, the Commonwealth of Puerto Rico, or a territory of the United States

Graduate Training: Subsequent to obtaining a Doctor of Medicine or Doctor of Osteopathic Medicine degree, a candidate must have had at least one year of supervised experience providing direct service in a clinical setting, i.e., a one-year internship or the first year of a residency program in a hospital or an institution accredited for such training.

In addition to meeting the basic requirement above, to qualify for this position you must also meet the qualification requirements listed below:

Residency Training: Applicants must have successfully completed the required accredited residency training in the specialty of the position to be filled (Internal Medicine) and equivalent experience and training equal to at least four years.
Experience may not be substituted for residency training that is required for the specialty identified.
