Overview:

Together with the Department Chair and the Senior Vice President for the Surgery Department. The Administrator of Surgery is responsible for financial, administrative, operational, managerial, human resources and strategic planning issues related to his/her assigned divisions.
Responsibilities span all areas of the department and hospital missions, including administrative leadership for clinical care and teaching. The Administrator is responsible for the oversight of surgical care, outreach, billing and compliance initiatives and for all personnel matters related to Faculty, Fellows, Residents, Professional and Support Staff.

Responsibilities:

 •  Accountable for the financial operations/management, in accordance with the Departmental standards and in collaboration with the Chair and/or Senior Leadership member. Specifically responsible for the management of the operating budget which includes the development of annual budgets, variance reports, performance analysis and grant funding. In addition, responsibilities include revenue cycle management, including analysis of billing & collections, oversight of revenue cycle processes within the scope of accountabilities (assessment of compliance/coding of physician documentation, etc.). Financial analysis associated with strategic planning, business and development & market analysis to evaluate growth opportunities. Provides counsel and expertise to the Chair and SVP to ensure efficient and effective operations.
 •  Provides strategic direction and operational leadership for all initiatives and programs across the division. Creates and sustains a culture of operational excellence that supports its divisions’ business strategies and upholds Brookdale’s mission, vision, and core values. Responsible for the identification of outreach activities, oversight, and continuous improvement of the divisional operations while ensuring adherence to all clinical and billing regulations.
 •  Coordinates new and on-going recruitment, promotion and retention activities for all staff (including faculty, fellows, residents, and all non-MD Staff). Responsible for selection, productivity, training, performance management and development for all staff. Enforces and assists in the interpretation of Brookdale Policies and Procedures, including employee/labor relations, rules of conduct, disciplinary action, grievance procedures and other personnel issues for all staff. Also, support the management of CIR represented house staff.
 •  Develops and maintains an understanding of the competitive marketplace for Department services. Identifies new opportunities for growth and threats to current market share, collecting and analyzing data to support findings, and develops business plans for implementation of new services and new services that support the Department’s planning and marketing efforts. Assists and advises the Chair on matters relating to the Department’s strategic position.
 •  Participate in a variety of Departmental, Hospital and community service activities (committees and project teams, attendance at the monthly management meetings, when applicable, participates in presentations, abstracts, posters and community service projects).
 •  Ensure staff is appropriate trained to use EPIC and other systems. Internal systems in place to ensure compliance with protocols as well as identification of system enhancements.
 •  All other duties as requested.

Qualifications:

Education:

 •  Master’s degree in an area related to health care management required.
 •  Bachelor’s degree acceptable for extraordinary experience and skills.

Experience:

 •  Minimum of five (5) years managerial experience.
 •  Experience needs to include medical training program.

Knowledge and Skills:

 •  Ability to fully utilize BHMC’s electronic record systems, equipment and other healthcare and billing systems relevant to this position.
 •  Strategic planning skills for inpatient and outpatient services, administrative, finances, staffing and departmental programming.
 •  Excellent knowledge of financial management of grants.

Physical Requirements:

 •  Consistent with requirements for working in a patient care setting, radiation emitting machinery setting, nuclear isotopes setting, and an office setting.
 •  Position requires prolonged periods of standing, reaching, walking throughout the working day.
 •  Position will be required to stoop, bend, lift, and carry items weighing up to 25 pounds
