Position Summary:

Nusano has an exciting opportunity for a Senior Mechanical Engineer at our Salt Lake City Utah facility. This Mechanical Engineer will work with the Targetry team to design heavy ion solid, liquid, and gaseous medical isotope targets. To execute this project, we are looking to add talented people to the team who are mission-driven, provide diverse perspectives, and who have demonstrated exceptional results through a range of different pursuits.
This team member will be primarily responsible for close collaboration within the Development & Engineering (D&E) team to carry out critical engineering tasks as well as opportunities to optimize component designs and processes.

Responsibilities:

What You'll Do:

 •  Assist in the design, engineering, and testing of heavy ion medical isotope targets
 •  Guide the selection of appropriate target and target body materials with heat transfer, strength, fatigue, chemistry, and radiation damage considerations
 •  Create detailed 3D models and 2D engineering drawings
 •  Lead, advise, and perform FEA and CFD modeling efforts for heat transfer, thermal, stress, and fatigue performance of target designs
 •  Work with outside vendors on the manufacture and sourcing of components
 •  Develop and conduct formal acceptance procedures for outsourced components
 •  Translate concepts into detailed engineering drawings, carry out design analysis, identify potential problems, and independently or collaboratively develop solutions
 •  Manage projects with efficient utilization of staff, schedule, and budget
 •  Train staff on equipment and procedures; ensure technical continuity and safety training for staff
 •  Direct activities and staff assignments to ensure technical support meets costing and schedule objectives
 •  Develop test plans and participate in tests to qualify and evaluate the performance of targets
 •  Present project results and designs and respond to questions concerning engineering design and operation
 •  Guide team using design and manufacturing tools such as DFMEA, RCA, DMAIC, V&V test planning
 •  Provide oral and written reporting on project status to project and upper management stakeholders
 •  Work with vendors and internal resources to fabricate, assemble, and validate components and systems
 •  Perform with a safety mindset at the forefront of all work

Qualifications:

Minimum Requirements:

 •  Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in mechanical engineering, materials science, or related field
 •  Related professional work experience (8+ years)
 •  Advanced understanding of mechanism design, structural analysis, heat transfer, and thermal analysis, and ability to apply these to solve engineering problems (5+ years)
 •  Proficiency with FEA software, preferably ANSYS Mechanical and Fluent (2+ years)
 •  Proficiency in Material Science and the impact of radiation damage, heat cycling, and fatigue on material properties (2+ years)
 •  Technical experience with the installation and commissioning of precision scientific, mechanical, plumbing, or vacuum systems (2+ years)
 •  Substantial technical experience with advanced knowledge and judgment in most of the following areas:
 •  Reliability engineering of highly complex and integrated mechanical systems
 •  Welding, machining, and mechanical assembly processes and techniques
 •  3D CAD Design and drafting in SolidWorks and SolidWorks PDM
 •  Project management abilities defined as the ability to control scope, cost, and schedule
 •  Metrology, inspection, quality control, and test methods related to manufacturing
 •  Ability to supervise and safely direct activities of small teams of technical personnel
 •  Ability to interact and communicate efficiently with researchers, engineers, designers, machinists, and engineering technicians to provide a high level of customer service
 •  Fully proficient with digital productivity tools (Google Suite products, Microsoft Office products)
 •  Demonstrated analytical thinking and rapid learning

Preferred Experience:

 •  PhD in Mechanical Engineering or related field
 •  Highly prefer experience in designing for and working within radiation environments
 •  Experience with nuclear Commercial-Grade Dedication (CGD) or related standards
 •  Six Sigma or Lean manufacturing certifications
 •  Experience integrating precision mechanical systems into facility and system design
 •  GD&T and P&ID proficiency within ASME Standards
 •  A love for Salt Lake City
 •  Leadership experience
 •  Experience working with a quality program and quality standards

Physical Requirements:

 •  Work to be conducted in an office environment, laboratories, and/or production environment.
 •  Must be comfortable working within radiation environments and/or GMP.
 •  Must be able to lift, push, and/or pull a maximum of 20 pounds.
 •  Must be able to sit for long periods of time.
 •  Frequent use of computer with repetitive use of keyboard, mouse, and manual dexterity.
 •  Ability to travel for experiments, visiting vendors, training, and attending conferences.
