Electrical Project Engineer
About This Role
We are seeking a full-time, permanent Project Engineer to join our Edmonton, AB team. The engineer should be a licensed Professional Engineer (P-Eng) in Canada with minimum 7 years power utility experience in transmission and/or distribution design.Lead complex distribution projects, authenticate engineering designs, and mentor the next generation of engineers. Shape the infrastructure that powers communities and lead innovation and engineering excellence at Utilitek.
QualificationsBachelors degree in Electrical Engineering or a related accredited engineering program.
Registered as a Professional Engineer (P.Eng.) with the Association of Professional Engineers and Geoscientists of Alberta (APEGA).
7+ years of experience in electrical utility engineering, with a focus on transmission and/or distribution system design.
Strong understanding of applicable electrical codes, utility standards, and regulatory requirements in Alberta and Canada.
Excellent communication skills (written and verbal) in English.
Legally eligible to work in Canada (citizen, permanent resident, or valid work authorization).
Responsibilities
As our Project Engineer, you will be the technical backbone of our distribution engineering practice. You will lead the design, authentication, and delivery of complex overhead and underground distribution projects while ensuring all work meets applicable codes, safety standards, and client requirements.
This role combines hands-on technical leadership with mentorship responsibilities, guiding junior engineers and technologists while collaborating across disciplines to deliver exceptional results. You will translate client objectives into robust engineering packages, perform advanced load-flow and short-circuit studies, authenticate IFC drawings, and lead cross-functional design reviews.
Extensive design experience in overhead and underground line distribution system up to 25kV. Your responsibilities typically include the following:
Managing and Mentoring Engineers:
Planning, prioritizing, and delegating engineering work while balancing project schedules, budgets, and quality expectationsRunning effective one-on-ones, feedback, and performance discussions to grow capability and accountability
Coaching staff on technical standards, design practices, and professional development goals
Aligning team capacity with project demand and escalating risks or resource gaps to leadership
Partnering on hiring, onboarding, and knowledge transfer to strengthen the team
Fostering psychological safety, respectful collaboration, and adherence to health, safety, and compliance requirements
Detailed design of overhead and underground projects such as:
Primary line rebuilds and extensionsPrimary line voltage conversions
Installation and replacement of single and three phase primary line equipment
Revamp of facilities
Low voltage correction
Overloaded transformer replacement and secondary load splitting
Replacement of damage facilities
Life cycle replacement of existing facilities such as poles, lines, transformers, switching cubicles, etc.
Customer service applications
Relocation and removal of facilities
Perform calculations such as:
Wire sag, tension and swingCalculation of the most economic ruling span
Wire clearances
Pole selection based on calculated loadings (wind, snow/ice, equipment and conductors)
Guy and anchor calculation and analysis
Secondary wire sizing and loading
Load calculation to ensure proper transformer sizing and loading
Voltage drop calculation
Software: SPIDA Calc, Quick Pole, PLS-CADD, Microstation.
